Reverse-collapsed view of comment threads
Short, concise description of the idea
Show (collapsed - timestamp, author, subject only) ancestor comments of the thread rooted in a specific comment, with that comment and the ones under it (up to a certain depth) being displayed expanded.
Full description of the idea
Currently, when you display a comment thread (like http://community.livejournal.com/efw/726978.html?thread=20996290#t20996290), the ancestors of the first comment of that thread aren't visible at all, and you need to follow the "Parent" link repeatedly (until you reach the toplevel comment that started the thread) to display them. In addition, when using that method, all "cousin" comments are also retrieved and displayed, which isn't always needed or desirable, if the goal is to reach quickly a comment somewhere upthread by a specific user, or with a specific subject. Having a 1-line-per-comment list of comments above the first expanded (fully displayed) comment would make that navigation task easier.
- - easier upthread navigation
- - (possibly) less load on servers, because the user doesn't have to retrieve the parent comments one by one, which currently also triggers retrieval and display of sibling/cousin comments not needed for the task at hand
- - possible user confusion, because unlike the current view of collapsed threads, not all comments under a comment that's shown (expanded or collapsed) will be shown.
- - (possibly) higher server load, because the ancestors of the first expanded comment (which aren't currently retrieved) may not be needed at all.
