"Track Discussion" option in comments

Short, concise description of the idea
Hmm..didn't know what to call it. Oh well. Give the user an option to have all comments on a certain post e-mailed to them, even if they weren't the originator of the post.

Full description of the idea
(see above)

An ordered list of benefits

  • -I see a few situations where this would be useful. I think it would be mainly useful in communities where posts get a lot of comments, such as this one. For example, if someone posts a suggestion here, I want to read everyone's comments, because odds are, a person with POWER (bwahaha) will see it and explain why or why not this suggestion will or will not be implemented. I try to check up on a lot of posts and currently there's no way to do this without bookmarking each post and checking up on it, or adding it to my memories. I don't really like either option. But maybe that's just me.
  • An ordered list of problems/issues involved

  • -People could end up getting clogged mailboxes if a thread is REALLY active (like the wishlist thread in lj_win32 - in fact, that's another community I was going to mention as this feature being useful for). But this should obviously be an option for each individual post, so users could pick and choose.
  • -Might be a strain on the servers - I don't know about those kinda things. You guys know better than I do ^^
  • An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation

  • -I don't know how this would be programmed, but since users can get replies to their own posts/comments, it probably isn't impossible to change it around.
  • -I think if this was implemented, there should be a button added to the toolbar with the add friend, tell a friend, add memory, etc. If the option was turned on to recieve all comments, the user would start getting them via e-mail. Bingo.
  • ..So what does everyone think?
