Disabling auto-format by default in update.bml

Disabling auto-format by default in update.bml

Short, concise description of the idea
Allow users to decide if they prefer auto-format to default to off instead of on.

Full description of the idea
The livejournal update page has a checkbox labelled "disable auto-format". This turns off the auto-formatter, which adds proper HTML whitespace where the user has left blank lines, and turns URLs into links.

Many users prefer to have the auto-formatter on all or most of the time, only disabling it when they have some complex HTML to post which they don't want it to interfere with. For them the current behaviour is perfect.

However other users prefer to write in HTML all the time, for the greater flexibility this gives, and end up having to remember to tick the box every time or go back and edit the post if they forget.

It would be useful if it were possible to change the default setting of this box, so that it is always in the state you use most of the time.

An ordered list of benefits
  • Saves time when making posts
  • Prevents accidental posts which have HTML formatting as well as auto-formatting

An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • Not clear where this option would live in journal configuration

An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation
  • Perhaps it should ask if you want to make this the default when you change the setting, and save a cookie to remember?
