Message management

Message management

Short, concise description of the idea
Is it possible to have the 'messages' section of LJ set to email only?

Full description of the idea
Right now, I receive all comments/updates via email and in the LJ messages section. As I only ever pay attention to my email and never read these LJ-archived messages... can there be a way to turn that off? As in, have these notifications only sent by email and not saved in a 'messages' section that requires me spend time deleting 200 unread messages every few weeks?

I know some people do appreciate the ability to read all of their messages directly on LJ, but this should be an option. People who only want to receive email notifications should be allowed to opt out of the message archive centre.

An ordered list of benefits
  • Will save time for users who only want to receive one notification of comments/friend additions/etc.. Deleting pages and pages of unread messages is time-consuming, especially when one is on a dial-up connection.
  • Will cut down on the amount of unwanted duplicate messages sent and streamline the system.

An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • I can forsee no drawbacks to this suggestion if it is provided on an opt-out basis and users are able to choose their preference.

An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation
  • Currently, there are check boxes allowing users to choose which notifications they wish to receive (new comment, new friend, community invitation...) and whether or not they wish to also receive said notifications via email/IM/text message. If these checkboxes represented email only/IM only/text message only, and a new box were added for LJ message centre for people to check/uncheck at will, it would make things easier to customise exactly to one's preferences.
