Support Media RSS with Enclosures

Title
Support Media RSS with Enclosures

Short, concise description of the idea
When a user posts an image, audio file, or video to their LiveJournal, the image or video will be picked up by enclosure-ready RSS aggregators.

Full description of the idea
Support the "rel=enclosure" attribute in the RSS or atom feed. When a user posts an image, audio file, or video, the file will be enclosed in the user's feed, even if it is not included in LiveJournal's friends pages. This would allow people to use their LiveJournals for podcasting, videoblogging, and photoblogging.

The LJ styles/friends page could still not support displaying videos, if desired for security reasons.

An ordered list of benefits
  • Users would be able to podcast from their LJ without having to voice post.
  • Users could videoblog from LJ (and I would be able to promote LJ in my book on Videoblogging). Currently, Blogger is beating out LJ in the podcast/videoblog markets.
  • LJ would move forward technologically.

An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • Bandwidth for files stored on LJ's Scrapbook servers would go up.
  • Traffic in general for LJ would go up.
  • People could (and probably will) post porn inappropriately. They do that anyway, though-- the medium and the delivery mechanism don't change that.

An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation
  • rel="enclosure" is a known attribute to support. Yahoo! also has information on Media RSS available (http://search.yahoo.com/mrss).
