Syndicated accounts should obey HTTP 301 result codes

Syndicated accounts should obey HTTP 301 result codes

Short, concise description of the idea
When LiveJournal fetches a syndicated feed, if that feed replies with a Permanent Redirect then it should update its records and use the new URL.

Full description of the idea
This is what the HTTP RFC has to say about 301 result codes:

The requested resource has been assigned a new permanent URI and any future references to this resource SHOULD use one of the returned URIs.

From: http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec10.html

Similarly, LiveJournal should probably disable a feed that returns 410 Gone.

An ordered list of benefits
  • Reduced staff time spent updating feeds that have changed URLs but left a forwarding address.
  • Reduced syndicated account processing time.
  • Correctness.

An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • None

An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation
  • I could not say.
