Addition of flexible user contact point

Title
Addition of flexible user contact point

Short, concise description of the idea
Livejournal should add an extra box on the manage userinfo page for contact information that can be configured by the user.

Full description of the idea
Livejournal currently has places on the manage userinfo page where the user may enter AOL IM, ICQ, Yahoo! Id, Jabber, and MSN usernames. I suggest an additional box whose name and data can be configured by the user.

Example: I use Secure Shuttle Transport (SST) for most online communication; however I cannot enter my userid in a specific field on the userinfo page, and there aren't enough users of SST to warrant its inclusion as a distinct option.

Because of this, and because of the many other systems which have small numbers of users, I propose an additional box where I could enter "SST" for the name of the communication system and "xxxxxxx" for my userid and have that information appear on the userinfo page.

The name of the communication system and of course the username/userid entered would be specified on a per-user basis.

An ordered list of benefits

  • People have flexibility in adding new communication systems to Livejournal without needing tons of users of that system to justify the inclusion of the system as a distinct contact method (as AOL and Yahoo! are included as distinct communication systems)
  • An ordered list of problems/issues involved

  • People may mistake the additional box for another communication system and enter their AOL or Yahoo! username twice.
  • Users may misspell, mistype, or otherwise distort the name of the communication system.
  • An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation

  • Perhaps it would be more effective not to add the box directly on the manage userinfo page, but rather link to it, and force it to open in another window to prevent casual users from mistaking the box for something else.
