Parent/Child Communities

Title
Parent/Child Communities

Short, concise description of the idea
An organized and controlled system to place some communities inside another, somewhat like a category - sub-category idea.

Full description of the idea
It is common practice to mention other similar communities in the userinfo of a community. Often times, it is difficult to find all of the communities available in connection with a specific topic or group. If a community could "adopt" other communities, users could more easily locate the communities.

Example:
- Parent Community: livejournal
- Child Communities: lj_biz, news, etc

An ordered list of benefits

  • Organize communities
Increase sense of community throughout LJ
Reduce requests for lists of communities that are associated with X topic in community_quest
  • An ordered list of problems/issues involved

  • Increased load on servers (depricated with new technology)
A lot of work for the programmers
  • An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation

  • Through an "adoption" page, the "parent" or "child" can request adoption into the community
Through the same page, a community can remove themselves (as child) or another community (as parent)
Request process is in place to control which communities are a part of others
Child communities can have their own children
When viewing a community, option exists to view specific community or community and all children
Userinfo would display a list of children (if any)
Userinfo would display parent(s) (if any)
When a parent is listed in Userinfo, the number of children is listed next to it. Example: #livejournal(12)
The icon to the left of a community name would be different for parents and children
