Enable HTTP Plain/Digest authentication to facilitate viewing protected entries via syndication

Title
Enable HTTP Plain/Digest authentication to facilitate viewing protected entries via syndication

Short, concise description of the idea
If it were possible to log into LJ using Plain/Digest authentication, this would enable people to view protected entries.

Full description of the idea
Many popular RSS aggregators such as the one I use, intraVnews allow the retrieval of "secure" feeds via Plain/Digest authentication. While the auth method is not really *secure* because it doesn't use SSL or strong encryption, I feel it would be comparable to the level of security provided by the current model.

An ordered list of benefits

  • View a friends protected entries via RSS
  • If using a friends page RSS transforming style, see protected entries in it
  • An ordered list of problems/issues involved

  • New code would need to be written to handle Plain/Digest authentication
  • An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation

  • If the LJ team is interested in this suggestion but does not have the bandwidth to consider implementing it, I would be willing to work on the code in my spare time and donate it as a possible patch.
