New field in the User Info page.
Short, concise description of the idea
A 'Skype' field should be added to the User Info in addition to the instant messenger fields.
Full description of the idea
Skype is a voip (voice over ip) program that is quickly gaining popularity. It allows it's users to call eachother over the internet, but also supports some instant messaging service. I propose that a new optional field be added to the User Info page in addition to the AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo messenger, and Jabber fields. This would allow livejournal users with Skype software (which can be downloaded from http://skype.com ) to visit someone's profile, click on their Skype username, and instantly make a phone call.
An ordered list of benefits
Livejournal users would not only be able to instant message eachother from the site, but now would also be able call eachother using voip technology.
While users could easily add this tag ( < A HREF="CALLTO://USERNAME"> Text </a> )to the About User field, creating a field just for Skype would encourage more users to become aware of and actually download the software, thus leading to more skype users, thus leading to more lj users around the world developing closer relationships with eachother.
It would take livejournal to the next step as a social software hub by encouraging not just text interaction, but voice interaction.
The net will be a friendlier, more human place. (At least for livejournal users.)
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
Umm.. one line of optional clutter on the User Info page?
An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation
This should not be difficult to impliment as the tag: < A HREF="CALLTO://USERNAME"> Username </a> would usually do the trick.
Users can add this tag to their user Bio's or even anywhere in their journals to accomplish the same thing I'm proposing, but this does not encourage usage amongst the masses. An actual Skype field would be optimal in my mind.
