Usenet Style Kill Files (a.k.a. The Ignore List)

Title
Usenet Style Kill Files (a.k.a. The Ignore List)

Short, concise description of the idea
Never see a stray electron from an Ignored user ever again.

Full description of the idea
This was brought up a long time ago, but I thought I'd re-suggest, add more detail and get more feedback.

Add a user to your Ignore list and as long as you're logged in, you:

- never see posts from that user in a community
- never see a comment from that user in a community
- never see a comment from that user in another user's journal
- never see that user's journal in your FriendsFriends view
- never receive e-mail notification of that user's comments to you whether you are the original poster or a commenter

As per scottfreeman, blocked comments would be displayed as something like this:

Post
-Friend1 Comment
--Friend2 Comment
---"Ignored User Comment (click to display)"
----Friend1 Comment

An ordered list of benefits

  • more control over your own LJ environment (other than just banning the user from your own journal/community)
  • less cortisol in the blood
  • An ordered list of problems/issues involved

  • server/database load issues (?)
  • users need to be warned that killfiling a user means EVERYTHING from that user gets hidden, even things that you might have wanted to see (ie. if they post to suggestions, lj_nifty or something)
  • An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation

  • this could be piggybacked on top of the banning feature (use the "banned users" list as the "ignored list"), but not necessarily.
  • Tags: abuse, killfile, ~ submitted - needs retagging
