E-mail notification of cluster downtime

E-mail notification of cluster downtime

Short, concise description of the idea
Keeping users informed of planned cluster downtime for maintenance.

Full description of the idea
As a Support volunteer, I see many requests from users upset that they cannot access their journals due to maintenance...and many of them are not happy campers about it. From reading those requests, what the users say can be boiled down to a couple issues, one of them being the lack of advance notice of maintenance.
Think about it. If something works when you go to bed, but you wake up the next day and it won't work, you're going to wonder why, especially if there seems to be no obvious explanation. I mean, yeah, users can be redirected to the Status page or the Maintenance journal, but wouldn't it be better for everyone's sanity if they were given some kind of warning before they attempt to use it?
I don't want it to sound like something technical. Just a brief yet concise form letter explaining what's happening. (See below...)

An ordered list of benefits

  • 1. Reduces user frustration over routine Maintenance.
  • 2. Cuts down on the volume of requests on Support.
  • 3. Could also possibly be used as an explanation letter in the event of emergency cluster outages.
  • An ordered list of problems/issues involved

  • 1. Might be difficult to implement, considering user load.
  • An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation

  • I thought something along this line for a form e-mail might work...
  • Dear User,
  • In order to allow your use of LiveJournal to be as pleasant as possible, we are currently doing Maintenance on the "x" cluster (where "x" is the cluster name). As a result, your journal may/will be inaccesible until this Maintenance is complete.

For further information, please visit the following URLs:
  • link to Status page
  • link to Maintenance journal
  • link to Support page
  • (Of course, these links are open to interpretation. Think of them as any relevant URLs that could be helpful.)
  • As always, we appreciate your patience as we strive to make LiveJournal even better.
  • Regards,
  • The LiveJournal Development Team

  • Again, I know it might seem crude, but I imagine it gives everyone a general idea.
