Etched with marks but I can deal

Change to personal info defaults

Change to personal info defaults

Short, concise description of the idea
Email address should not be displayed on userinfo page by default.

Full description of the idea
If someone creates an account and doesn't edit the info, until they edit the info, their email address is sitting out there on the web, free for the taking by spam bots. I think that either "Show email address on profile" should be unchecked by default, or, at the very least, "Mangle email address so it won't be found by robots" should be checked by default. Who DOESN'T want to mangle their email address so robots won't find it?

An ordered list of benefits

  • Less risk of getting spammed
  • More automatic privacy for user email addresses
  • An ordered list of problems/issues involved

  • Users who do want their emails displayed will have to go in and manually set it. (But then at least couldn't it be mangled by default?)
  • It takes two seconds to fix yourself. (But I created a test account and forgot to edit the info, went back weeks later and found my email had been on the web all this time. I nearly died.)
  • An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation

  • I imagine it would be just a simple switch from enable by default to disable by default.
