optional "language" toggle for random journal search

optional "language" toggle for random journal search

Short, concise description of the idea
Allow users to specify the language the random journal they are sent to is in.

Full description of the idea
This is in some ways similar to the suggestion here: http://www.livejournal.com/talkread.bml?journal=suggestions&itemid=31132 that seems to have never been implemented. That suggestion dealt with language as a directory option. I was bored and going to random journals, and was sent to one in Russian. This isn't that big of a deal (although it did annoy me to realize how much Russian I've forgotton since high school), since I can always hit "random" again and will probably get an English one next time. However, I realized that the "random" feature is probably pretty much non-usable for those LJ users who don't speak English, since they'll rarely get a journal they understand. It would be nice to be able to specify the language(s) of the random journal you are sent to.

An ordered list of benefits

  • Would allow non-English-speaking users to easily find new journals in a language they can read
  • Would keep me from feeling like a monolingual loser when I'm looking for new journals to read
  • An ordered list of problems/issues involved

  • A new db field with journal language(s) would have to be created (users should be able to specify more than one langauge, since some journals may be multi-lingual)
  • Would cause a bigger db hit when using random (include journal language information when populating the table random uses now? I haven't looked at the code)
  • Might encourage more "random bloat" where other options are added to the "random" search, making it less and less random. "Ok, I want a random 23 year old in Boise who speaks Swedish and likes ice cream sandwiches."
  • An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation

  • A new field would have to be added to the db of journal language, and the information from that field would have to be passed to the table where the journals to come up for random.
  • "Random" would have to become a page where you could specify to optionally only include journals in a certain language or possibly languages.
