Error messages should point users to http://status.livejournal.com/

Error messages should point users to http://status.livejournal.com/

Short, concise description of the idea
Error messages should point users to http://status.livejournal.com/ and make it configurable so other LJ sites can also point to their respective status pages.

Full description of the idea
With today's database server downing, I realize that some users still don't know about http://status.livejournal.com/. I think it would be nice if some or all of the likely error messages would point users to the status page. Then they would be told of the current status, and maybe learn not to keep refreshing pages all over the place.

An ordered list of benefits

  • Better-informed users
  • Hopefully less server hogging during trouble-times
  • An ordered list of problems/issues involved

  • Most errors happen randomly when the servers are in good condition. Users might not find helpful info on the status page.
  • Extra bandwith to send the extra error message. That bandwidth might be harmful during trouble-times.
  • Might be difficult to code this with the way errors are currently handled.
  • An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation

  • We could keep this ljcom specific (since we only know about our status site). Or, we could make this configurable for all LJ sites.
  • I think we should create a var in ljdefaults.pl that will be reported by LJ::STATUSURL or something like that. Error messages can check to see if LJ::STATUSURL is defined. If it is defined, then display an appended error message like, "Check the *status page* to see about known problems."
