wilcards in searches

wilcards in searches

Short, concise description of the idea
It's currently very difficult to find someone if you "sort of know" what their username is, and you can't look for people whose usernames contain a certain string but aren't just that string. Being able to use wildcards in searches would help this.

Full description of the idea
I don't know if it's possible to set up the LJ search so that it can use wildcards, but it would be nice if you were looking for people with a certain string in their usernames, or email, or something, like all users who had "speth" or "english" or "xy" or something. I've seen searches do this (usually without being asked explicitly) and think it would be neat. I thought of it when looking for lj_english, because I didn't know what it was called, but I knew it had to have "english" in it.

An ordered list of benefits

  • can find people whose usernames or emails you only sort of know, or are unsure of.
  • can search for users with a specific string, if you happen to be interested in finding users that way.
  • An ordered list of problems/issues involved

  • could be a hassle to code.
  • might be a bigger database hit if it had to do multiple searches.
  • An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation

  • Have people be able to type some simple wildcards, like * and ?, into the search box, and the search box will understand that and look for all things that match the pattern instead of just an exact text match.
  • I don't really know how this would be done, as I don't code.
