Self-moderation of entries by categorisation (for filtering on friends lists)

Title
Self-moderation of entries by categorisation (for filtering on friends lists)

Short, concise description of the idea
Users select a category for the journal entry they are making, ranging from "life changing", "important", "every day", "thoughts", "quizzes" for example. Friends who are too busy to read through the less important entries can then have LJ filter them so people can just keep up with the important events in their friends' lives.

Full description of the idea
There have been suggestions similar to this but I could find none on a self-moderation basis, hence my suggestion. It also encompasses several similar suggestions into one cohesive update. The best part about this is that it would be peer reviewed - people who choose to adopt this will encourage their friends to adopt it in a similar manner to the <lj-cut> tag. The filtering should work such that only posts of X category or more important should be shown. So for example if "Quizzes" was the least important category, "Every day" was more important and "Life changing event" was the most important then someone filtering on "Every day" would see posts categorised for "Every day" and "Life changing events" but not "Quizzes".

An ordered list of benefits

  • Enables busy people to still keep up with the important things in their friends' lives whilst cutting down on the amount of time spent on LJ.
  • People who post a lot of diverse stuff ranging from important things through to quizzes and random thoughts need not be penalised / disregarded by potential friends.
  • Will be adopted by LJers in a similar manner to the <lj-cut> tag.
  • An ordered list of problems/issues involved

  • It will need a new column in the database for the category levels.
  • Categories will need to be decided on and pre-defined at a global level for this to work.
  • The Friends Filter GUI and indeed table for storing filter information will need a new column too.
  • An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation

  • Simply add another drop-down to the Full Update page / clients with the category levels on.
  • Will need a default level ("Every day" perhaps?) so friends can still be filtered if they choose not to use the new categories.
  • Friends Filters will need a drop-down to select the filter level.
