Title
Always display "Birthdays" module and/or link to /birthdays.bml on the homepage

Short, concise description of the idea
The LiveJournal homepage [http://www.livejournal.com/] [alternatively some other place] should always display the "Birthdays" module, or at least a link to [http://www.livejournal.com/birthdays.bml], even if none of the users' friends has their birthday within the next month.

Full description of the idea
[http://www.livejournal.com/birthdays.bml] is currently somewhat hidden. As per the last comment on this suggestion [http://community.livejournal.com/suggestions/645214.html], it is not displayed in the site map or another place because it is linked from [http://www.livejournal.com/] - it can be accessed through the "more" link in the "Birthdays" module. However, this module will not be displayed at all if none of a user's friends has their birthday within the next month. This may make users think that the birthday module is broken or has been removed altogether; it certainly makes the page quite difficult to find, especially as it isn't documented in the FAQs. Of course one can reach the page through the "Site" search, but a direct link would be nice. Also, a message informing a user that none of their friends has their birthday within the next month may be helpful.

Therefore, I'd suggest to either just display a link to the Birthdays page on the homepage [alternatively somewhere else where it can be found], or, preferably, to always display the full module. If none of the viewer's Friends has their birthday within the next month, it could state something to that effect and display the "more" link so that users could view the full Birthdays list.

An ordered list of benefits
  • Users will not think any longer that the birthday module is broken or has been removed.
  • Users can access the full list of their friends' birthdays more easily, especially if they list few friends so that there are long gaps between the birthdays.
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • Users might (and probably will) object to "cluttering" the homepage, especially if they list few or no accounts with birthdays as friends and aren't interested in the Birthdays page or in the module with the birthdays.

Title
Say Whom People Are Replying to in Notification E-mails...

Short, concise description of the idea
Is there a reason I'm not thinking of that the ominous "somebody" is in our e-mails instead of a person's user name?

Full description of the idea
Currently, notification e-mails say, "CANHAZGOTHGIRL replied to another comment somebody left in your LiveJournal post". I think it should say "CANHAZGOTHGIRL replied to a comment JEJUNE01 left in your LiveJournal post".

This is especailly helpful as the journal entry get older. In the case of a response to an anonymous comment, "somebody" is perfectly fine. And for your comments, it could simply say "you". (And that might be where the issues come in.)

If this causes people to freak out for whatever reason, how about at least putting their name before the quoted portion of the journal entry? It would then look something like this:

> JEJUNE01: What about adding this feature?

Their reply was:

We'll see what we can do!

An ordered list of benefits
  • Makes it clearer whom the person is replying to when reading several notification e-mails
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • There may be a reason why this was not already implemented, or perhaps it would actually cause confusion. Let's discuss.
