Title
Make 'Add Friend' in ESN also mark the item as 'Read'

Short, concise description of the idea
Alter the behavior of the 'Add Friend' option appearing on a notification item when someone friends you so that the notification is marked as 'Read' when it is used.

Full description of the idea
Currently when you are friended a notification is generated which includes an 'Add Friend' link. This feature is really helpful.

However once you've added your friend, the notification remains unread in your inbox, although the 'add friend' option changes to 'view profile'. It would be sensible if once you used the 'Add Friend' link, the notification was marked as read.

An ordered list of benefits

  • Better usability of the notifications inbox. If you've used a positive action from a message, you've clearly read it and so its status should be changed accordingly without further action on your part.

An ordered list of problems/issues involved

  • There may be an issue over what triggers the message being read. Clearly if you already have the user as a friend, the message shouldn't be marked read.

  • If you friend the user by other means that the 'add friend' option in the message, after the notification has been generated, maybe it should be marked Read.

  • This suggestion should impose minimal technical problems.

Title
Deselection of notification items after an action

Short, concise description of the idea
After an action has been taken on some notifications (e.g. mark as read, mark as unread), de-select the check boxes ready for the next action.

Full description of the idea
Currently after an action is performed on items in the notification inbox, the check box selections persist. This means that the user has to deselect the old selection and start again. A cleaner and more usable solution would be if the selection was automatically deselected.

An ordered list of benefits

  • Automatically deselecting a selection after an action could speed up usage of the inbox.

  • Deselection would prevent actions being accidentally taken against items left over from a previous selection.

An ordered list of problems/issues involved

  • Currently if a user takes the wrong action, it can be quickly undone as the selection persists. Deselection would prevent this.

Always allow posters to access their own friends-only community posts

Short, concise description of the idea
Allow users with community posting access to view their own members-only posts to communities they're not members of and comment on those posts.

Full description of the idea
Currently, a LiveJournal user can have posting access to a community without being a member of it (usually for a closed/moderated membership community). When posting members-only to that community (either by choice or because the community was set to members-only default posting), the user will not be able to see or edit their own post, comment on it, reply to comments, etc. This makes less sense now than it may have made in the past, since the user can now be notified of comments by email, with the original post included in comment notifications. The suggested change would give posters full access to their own posts, thus letting them edit, delete, or tag them (if allowed to tag by community settings), comment on them, reply to comments, manage comment threads, etc...

This could be done either for the current "can post, can't join" access, or through a new "can post and manage own posts, can't join" access level.

An ordered list of benefits
  • Would give authorized posters the same access to their members-only posts that they have to their public posts (assuming public posting is allowed).
  • Would remove the irritation factor of not being able to correct typos, reword for clarity, or reply to comments that you're notified of.
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • Giving posters full access to their own members-only posts could prevent or hinder current uses of that feature. That could be remedied by using the new access level mentioned in the detailed description above.

Mountain journal themes

Short, concise description of the idea
I would like to see mountain-themed journal styles

Full description of the idea
I would like to see any of the following journal themes created for the LJ community:
- mountain landscapes (sunrise, midday, nighttime, like the others)
- skier/snowboarder themes
- Denver skyline "Cityscape", with the mountains in the background

An ordered list of benefits
  • Basically, we have available to us every landscape imaginable except the mountains. There's nothing that looks like Colorado, where I live and the experience of which comprises much of my writing. I'm not gifted enough to create it myself, and I'm certainly not the only Coloradoan on LJ. Most folks here live for ski season. And the mountains behind the skyline would just be cool. Denver just got a lot of national exposure with the Rockies in the World Series, so it might be a good time to capitalize on that.
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • Can't think of any, since it's just a few journal theme ideas.
