Linking to other LJ sites

Linking to other LJ sites

Short, concise description of the idea
The ability to link users on other LJ based sites into my friends list.

Full description of the idea
It would be fantastically cool to link to a variety of people on different livejournal sites. It would mean, of course, that my LJ ID would be (which is also an email address, and could be used as a Jabber ID if LJ wanted to set up a jabber server). There's no reason there couldn't be an interop standard between journals, meaning that all Journals would belong to one big journal world! (goes off to take a cold shower)

An ordered list of benefits

  • I'd be able to keep track of people on multiple sites.
  • They'd be able to keep track of me too.
  • If done using a generic API, it could work with RSS too, or with non-LJ journal sites.
  • An ordered list of problems/issues involved

  • No idea, to be honest
  • An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation

  • Unique IDs would now be username@ljsite rather than just username.
  • Caching would probably be very important, to ensure that bandwidth wasn't completely overwhelmed.
  • Of course, you could just make RSS versions of the journals available, and I could use something else as an aggregator, rather than LJ itself.
