Communities and Invite Codes

Title
Communities and Invite Codes

Short, concise description of the idea
Give Communities more leeway and the potential to work with all users, even users outside Live Journal.

Full description of the idea
In general, Invite Codes are a pain. Nobody knows what to do with them, however. This suggestion does not try and solve that problem, but mearly take some of the sting out of Invite Codes. In this system, no Community needs an Inivite code to be created. A Live Journal member wants to create a community, and a community is made. The community is never a normal user and can never be a normal user and also the community never needs an invite code. After that, the community can be set up to store usernames and passwords in a seperate database. Thus, the community creator can send out special "Community Invite Codes" and sign up people so that they can post messages In That Community Only. They cannot post comments anywhere else, nor create journal entries anywhere else. In essence, the Communities at Live Journal would be given a lot more freedom and they would not suffer from the pains of Invite Codes.

An ordered list of benefits

  • Communities will have more members
  • Less people will be asking for invite codes, none for communities or community members
  • More power is given to community creators to allow or restrict their members
  • An ordered list of problems/issues involved

  • The Live Journal server program needs severe modifications to create communities in the way that I proposed.
  • The Live Journal server needs to create a user listing for each community, plans need to be made on how this would work, and Live Journal would need to tell the difference between the two.
  • The work required to set this system in place is going to be tremendous, as well as porting the old communities over.
  • An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation

  • Set up new member database to allow for community specific members, who do not have Live Journals.
  • Modify user creation part of the program to allow for community only members (as in, no journal for them).
  • Change creation program to create communities straight as communities and without invite codes.
  • Install a parallel invite code system for community only members, that can be created infinitely by community owners.
