Ressurect the Portal; Start Using It.

Ressurect the Portal; Start Using It.

Short, concise description of the idea
If one is logged in, have the portal be the first thing that comes up on; move the session/permanent cookie to that page.

Full description of the idea
As it stands, the portal is only available -- to my knowledge -- by going to it specifically at Personally, I found it a great idea. Logged-in users don't necessarily need information about the project, or how to create their own journal, or how to update their own. 'Edit Friends', 'Edit Personal Information', 'Edit Journal Entries', etc. could be moved to a few rows of text -- or, a new minibox. If the former, I suggest we do it like Yahoo! does theirs under their search box. For other things found on the main page, move them to the sidebar. Possibly include a link to the 'real' front page, by using the existing Home link on the purple bar by "News", "Help". Also, a choice in User Info(?) between current and portal-style home page would be good.

An ordered list of benefits

  • All the benefits of the existing portal, including friends' birthday list, statistics, Frank-box, more boxes to come
  • Less click-throughs from main page to update journal
  • Update Journal, Update Journal (Full mode) become redundant and therefore unnecessary
  • Arguably, more visually appealing
  • An ordered list of problems/issues involved

  • Useful information on current home page isn't as readily available
  • May be a higher strain on the server to grab friends' birthdays
  • An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation

  • Add boxes to portal [ex.: Edit, including Modify Journal, Edit Friends, Edit Entries, Edit Personal Info].
  • Ability to choose between portal and current style home page under User Info.
