Combining Tags

Combining Tags

Short, concise description of the idea
I would like to be able to combine two tags into one.

Full description of the idea
When one enters the "manage tags" portion of their journal, it allows them to see what tags are already existing, as well as providing an option to view the journal entries with that specific tag, an option to rename a tag, and an option to remove a tag from one's journal. Unfortunately, one cannot simply click on two tags and combine them into one or change the tags on multiple entries at once. For example, I have several entries with individual family members' names as tags. If I wanted to change it so that all of those entries were simply tagged "family", I would have to go one by one through each family member, to each individual entry, and manually change it. When you have over a thousand tags to several hundreds or thousands of entries, this can be a daunting task that is more easily put off more and more or forced to be a gradual thing when one has the time. Therefore, I propose that LiveJournal release a feature allowing us to combine multiple tags into a single, much simpler tag. Or, if it is possible, make it so that I can rename the tag and give it the same name as an already existing tag. If I give it a unique name that doesn't currently exist as a tag, it already edits all entries with the old tag and give it the new one instead. With the new feature, we could just rename the tag "sister" as "family", and LJ would automatically remove the "sister" tag from the entries and replace it with "family".

An ordered list of benefits
  • Managing one tag that is attached to several entries would be much simpler.
  • You could manage tags on multiple entries, not just one.
  • Reducing the number of tags would take a lot less time.
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • It would take time to update the current "Manage Tags" page.
  • I do not have the brain power or coding knowledge to hack and fix this problem myself.
