character limit warning

character limit warning

Short, concise description of the idea
It would be useful to have some sort of warning when you are writing a long comment and getting close to the allowed amount of characters.

Full description of the idea
On some sites where there limits to how long a post or comment can be they have a small counter so the user can see how many characters they have left to work with. Given the fact that LJ allows for pretty long comments, it's difficult to know when you are getting close to the limit and then you have to either spend a lot of time editing and re-wording stuff or splitting it into to two separate comments. If you knew when you were getting close to the limit, you could do something about it sooner, either start a new comment or edit without having to attempt posting regularly to see how many more characters you have to shave off.

An ordered list of benefits
  • People would be able to see when their posts or comments were too long
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • Some might find it confusing or annoying to have the counter there.
  • (maybe it could be an opt-in/opt-out setting for the journal)
