Support Data URL's in img tags

Short, concise description of the idea
LJ should not strip valid Data URL's from img tags.

Full description of the idea
Data URL's are a nice way to support small images by including their source in an img tag, which saves an extra HTTP request. You can read more about them at

They are supported in all major browsers (even IE 8!), but when I tried to put one in an LJ post, it showed up as an img tag with an empty src. I assume it's being stripped out for a security reason or something - my suggestion would be to update that filter to allow the Data URL syntax to pass through.

An ordered list of benefits
  • Can reduce external HTTP requests, making some pages load faster.
  • In the future, small mood icon sets could be converted to this format, which would save loading time and HTTP hits on the LiveJournal server on almost all posts.
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • Have to be careful to make sure the URL is properly formatted to avoid security holes.
